What is the difference between a spruce and a Norway spruce?
Norway Spruce is the fastest growing spruce we carry but it's not as dense as other spruce trees. It is sometimes used as a Christmas tree. White Spruce is a hardy, long-lived evergreen tree. It can grow in many soil types and moisture levels.
Black Spruce is a medium-sized coniferous tree that tolerates wet ground better than most spruces. It has a characteristic straight trunk and a narrow crown. Norway Spruce is a large, openly branched evergreen recognized by its drooping branchlets and large cones.
The needles of white spruce are bluish-green and up to three-quarters of an inch long. Norway spruce has shiny dark green needles that can reach 2.5 cm in length and grows much taller than white spruce.
Norway Spruce has the largest cones of all Spruce trees and is a key identifier for the species. White Spruce produces cones that are 1-2 inches, Colorado Blue Spruce produces cones that are 2-4 inches, and Norway Spruce cones are 4-7 inches.
Uses: The Norway spruce's tough and elastic timber, known as 'white deal', is used for internal building work, boxes and paper. Its sound transmitting properties make it ideal for certain parts of violins - its timber is sometimes referred to as 'violin wood'.
Hybrids are commonly known as Norwegian spruce, which should not be confused with the pure species Norway spruce.
Norway Spruce (Picea abies) – This is the fastest growing Spruce tree around. It actually does very well for windbreaks in areas where it is strong. It's a hardy tree that can tolerate various soil conditions and is prized for its conical shape and resilience in cold climates.
