Are spruce trees poisonous to dogs?
Live Trees: Fir, spruce, and pine trees make excellent Christmas trees and are generally non-toxic to pets.
Yew pine, also known as Buddhist pine, are evergreen shrubs or trees, all parts of which can be toxic to dogs when consumed, leading to diarrhea and vomiting among other symptoms.
BOXWOOD TREES
The boxwood is a flowering evergreen tree and is often used in gardens or yards as shrubs or dividers. The entire tree is poisonous to dogs, both orally and topically, it is best to have the tree removed if they are anywhere a dog will have access to and completely remove the tree.
None of the chemicals in the needles or in the sap produced by pines or spruces are particularly dangerous if ingested by either dogs or humans, but they can cause an upset tummy or irritation in the mouth if your doggy decides to chew on them.
Whether they are on your Christmas tree, a wreath or some garland, pine needles can be a problem if ingested. The needles can puncture or irritate the lining of your dog's stomach, and the oils can irritate the mucous membranes. The needles may not kill your pet, but they can make him really uncomfortable and ill.
Mistletoe, holly, lilies, azaleas, evergreens, and poinsettias are poisonous to animals. Choosing holiday decor for a home with pets is risky.
The Dangers Associated With Christmas Trees
Live Trees: Fir, spruce, and pine trees make excellent Christmas trees and are generally non-toxic to pets. The needles, however, can cause oral irritation and in excessive amounts, gastrointestinal upset.
Sago Palm: Often used as an ornamental shrub in temperate zones, it's considered one of the most toxic plants for dogs. Every part of the plant is toxic, especially the seeds. Ingesting just a few seedpods can result in acute liver failure.
While many varieties of wood are not toxic to dogs, there are quite a few that are – including cherry, oak, orange, red maple, wisteria, yew, and more.
Hostas are popular for being a low-maintenance plant. They grow fast and require very little attention. But if you have a pet you will have to pay attention to them around your Hostas. The toxins glycoside saponins are what make Hostas poisonous for pets.
Is spruce Bark toxic to dogs?
The most common types of Christmas trees including pine, fir and spruce are not highly toxic to dogs, but oils they produce and the pine needles that drop from the tree can pose a risk. Not only can the sharp pine needles get stuck in your dog's paws, they can also cause a mild stomach upset or blockage if eaten.
Mulberry trees are a major dog allergen, as well. The same goes for primroses, gas plant trees, philodendrons, purple leaf velvet plants, wandering jew plants, Bermuda grass, oak trees, acacia shrubs and groundcovers, snailseed vines, and daylilies. There are also more wild plants you want your pet to avoid.
If your pet ingests needles, they could bring about serious gastrointestinal problems. Pine tree needles can puncture the soft tissues that line a dog's digestive tract. Sometimes the pointy pine needle will move deep into the tissue causing a foreign body reaction, which often leads to severe infections and abscesses.
Some species of pine trees, such as the ponderosa pine and the Norfolk Island pine, produce toxic compounds that can be harmful to humans if ingested. These compounds can cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
One of the wood types that can pose a problem for dogs is pine since it can contain both natural and artificial toxins, depending on its source. Additionally, there is always the risk of gastrointestinal injury if there are broken bits of wood that get ingested.
Symptoms of ingestion can include mild vomiting or diarrhea, but a bigger concern is a possible blockage or puncture in the gastrointestinal tract. Needles can also injury delicate paw pads or the skin between your pet's toes.
All varieties of the yew, a common evergreen, contain toxins that are poisonous to dogs. Every part of the plant is dangerous, as they have taxines, a bitter poison in the leaves and seeds. When ingested by your pooch, it can lead to vomiting, difficulty breathing, seizures, dilated pupils, coma, and even death.
Evergreens usually have spiny branches are that unattractive for chewing, but if your dog does decide to chew any part of the tree, it could release toxic compounds.
Most common and wild evergreens are edible, including pine (Pinus genus), hemlock (Tsuga genus), juniper (Juniperus genus) and cedar (Cedrus genus). However, be aware that the yew tree (Taxus genus), also an evergreen, is ornamental and is toxic.
Is arborvitae toxic to dogs and cats? Arborvitae can be poisonous for cats and dogs when ingested in high quantities. Eating it can cause nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and death (though highly unlikely).

If you purchase a product through this article, we may receive a portion of the sale. A dog may also experience acorn poisoning (also called Quercus poisoning) by eating oak leaves. It's particularly dangerous for dogs to eat buds or oak leaves in the spring or green acorns in the autumn.
The ability to avoid poisons and harmful foods varies between cats, dogs, other animals. Dogs, for one, can show amazing animal instincts, but knowing which foods are good for them and which aren't, isn't one of those talents.
Dog poisoning symptoms include vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, coughing, or drooling. If your dog just brushed up against some poisonous plants, they may develop rashes or blisters.
Contact the vet immediately, as your dog may need to be made to vomit or to receive activated charcoal to bind the toxins.
